So 2015 was the year I finally started getting serious about fitness. There was to be no more of this half-hearted gym going, I wanted to get into a routine and start feeling the benefits of exercise. I’d worked out the things I liked doing (Zumba FTW) plus the things that were a bit of a challenge (hello burpees), all I needed was to do them on a regular basis. After all, my Nan is nearly 80 and managing a few sessions at the gym a week, so there was no reason why I couldn’t try as well. Now it’s July, I thought I’d share a few things that have motivated me and kept me making the most of my membership 6 months on.
Investing In My Kit
Of course fashion had to come first! I now have multiples of everything, so that a massive washing pile is no longer an excuse for not working out. I like things to be a bit clashy, so I work out in oversized streetwear tees and patterned leggings, with a flash of neon thanks to my trainers. It’s definitely consistent with my usual style, though I tend to get even braver with 90s style logos and the odd sweatband.
Buddying Up
Luckily my housemates and I are all members of the same gym, so we try and go to a lot of classes together. As well as being pretty fun (we’ve been known to snap a selfie or two along the way), we can motivate each other and offer support. I’ve even been tempted to get into running after sponsoring my friend for her half-marathon, since it’s so inspiring to see someone set a difficult goal and achieve it.
Trying New Things
Although I could quite happily do the same Zumba class every day, it’s important to mix things up and not get to comfortable. I knew that there were things that I could never see myself doing at the gym, but what was the middle ground? I decided to delve into my timetable, trying things like Spinning, Aerobics, Body Balance and HIT for the first time. I obviously lived to tell the tale, as well as gaining a sense of achievement. I now try to do a lot more 30 minute classes; even though they’re tough, they’re over before you know it!
Is it weird that I’m enjoying buying sportswear more than my usual clothes at the moment? I need to add these to my collection!
